Today’s reading from the Well’s Around The Word In 30 Days (Good Call Jo) got me a little worked up about religion, and really excited about Jesus.
In John chapter 5, Jesus tells a man who literally could not walk, to get up and go for a stroll. What an amazing miracle! Doctors did not find a cure, he didn’t wear braces on his legs, or volunteer for some breakthrough physical therapy…Jesus just said get up and walk. And he did.
Imagine this scene: the same people walked by this guy everyday and he was probably known as that dude who sits by the pool and can’t walk. Then, you see Jesus tell the man to get up and he does! I can’t even comprehend what that was like to see live and in person.
How did the religious crowd react? With praise and thanksgiving to God, busting out in a song and celebrating the amazing work of Jesus to heal this man they had seen crippled for as long as they can remember?
Nope.
Jesus had the nerve to heal him on the sabbath, going against their religious tradition….
and it pissed them off.
I never want to be so stuck in religion that I miss what God is going.
