See You In 2010!

I am taking a little blog break and will be posting again January 1st, during my all day bowl game extravaganza.

I wanted to give you a great thought to chew on from John Acuff:

If we cared more about obedience than we do about failure, we’d be brave everyday.

What would it look like in Tallahassee if believers embraced that quote?

Few Randoms:

-We will only have our 11:05am service on December 27th and January 3rd.

-2009 has to be considered the “year of hand sanitizer.” I am thankful it exists, but good mercy.

-New Years Day should be September 1st.

-Well Sermon Series for this Winter/Spring:

Wait Till Next Year

Neutered

Glamorous.

Merry Christmas! Have the guts to tell family members about Jesus. There is so much a stake! My friend Mike has good thoughts on that struggle.

Another Way?

People are really busy. There is no other way around it. They just are.

I cannot stop thinking about how the local Church can do a better job of riding the waves of busyness.

Old way of thinking: there must be something every week outside of Sunday worship. Sunday School, a weekly small group, Bible Study, etc.

The way I am thinking: does it have to be that way? Is that the most effective system we can have in a world where people are straight up SWAMPED?

What if you did something REALLY WELL and intentional once a month (or even quarterly) that covered important areas of theology, doctrine, and Christ-centered Bible Study? It would look and function exactly like a regular small group.

Maybe this would allow people to actually have time to develop community outside of organized Church events because they wouldn’t have another weekly commitment.

Maybe this would get people to feed themselves and come to the monthly gathering ready to share.

Maybe people could actually make it and have it reserved on their calendars months in advance. They would know that the 2nd Tuesday (or whenever) of every month they are discussing the Book of Joshua with their peer group from Church.

It is almost impossible for people to make it every week for a small group.

Well peeps, relax: we are not taking away weekly small groups. I am just thinking about how we (and all Church communities) can do a better job of working with busyness, rather than adding to the problem.

Coming soon to the Well: monthly or quarterly options for those who are just plain busy.

Pastors and Church Leaders: you must think forward on this. Get it out of your religious head that it as to be a weekly thing or it is not legit.

War?

This below is from my good buddy, Jonathan on the so-called “War on Christmas.”

Most of us spend a paltry amount of time reflecting on Jesus compared to the massive amount of time we spend shopping at the mall, attending parties, wrapping and opening gifts, and eating huge meals. We spend an hour at church on Christmas Eve holding a candle and singing “Silent Night” but we spend four hours at the mall the day before. Sure, we may gather around grandpa for a stiff five minutes and listen to him read the Luke account of Christ’s birth, but we hardly listen. We are licking our chops at the mountains of presents behind him. In reality, Christmas for Americans–and yes, even the Christian ones–is shaped more by Currier and Ives than Joseph and Mary.

I often wonder what the Lord would think if he returned to earth at Christmas and surveyed the way al of his followers were celebrating his birth. What would the Son of Man who “has no place to lay his head” think about our gaudy decorations and lavish presents totaling over $400 billion in America alone? Would Immanuel be pleased to find us remembering his lowly birth with materialism and gluttony?

You can read the entire Part 1 of his 2 part article here. Many of us at The Well have been having the same conversation.

Preach To The Mirror

As many of you know, I am big on preaching the Gospel to myself.

This reminds me of…

Who God is: Holy.

Who I am: The Complete Opposite. One sin, by the way, makes you the opposite of Holy. I sin everyday, so…oh crap.

Sorry Paula, but opposites do not attract. He opens a can on sin. I mean A CAN.

What I deserve: eternal death/punishment for choosing sin over God.

His mercy: sending Christ to shed His own blood, as a perfect man, to take the punishment I deserved (see above).

Christ’s Immortality: proving to be God by not allowing death to conquer Him..rising from the grave.

What He makes me: Holy. Eph 5:27

Do you need to preach the Gospel to yourself?

How do we respond?

With Worship.
