Sunday Night Reflections

The atmosphere at the Well was great last night. My hope is that everyone who was in the room clearly understands the Gospel and Paul’s passion to see it communicated properly. Galatians chapter 1 is a powerful text and I look forward to working through the rest of the book during our “Losing My Religion” series. I gotta admit, incorporating one of my favorite bands of all time into our service was fun for me. Have you ever been to a worship service where they played a R.E.M. music video? That was a first for me!

My highlight of the evening (yes..even more than the mandolin during the video) was our band leading us in the song “God of this City.” I truly believe that greater things are yet to come and greater things are still to be done in Tallahassee. If we want to see greater things happen in our city we must pray for God to start a true movement of Gospel believing and preaching churches who love the people who are far from Christ in Tallahassee. I also believe that greater things will happen when we see Christian MEN step up to the plate and stop living like freaking wimps. I know the Christian ladies in town are ready to see it! I will talk more about the “man issue” tomorrow…while my prayer for this entire week is to see something in Tallahassee that can only be explained by God’s starting of a movement.

Also, please remember to bring a new basketball to Godby on Sunday.

Today is a national holiday for me…opening day of major league baseball…holla.

Old Friends and New

Tonight Krissie and I are hanging out with our friends Jeremy and Rachel Boeselt. What makes this great is that Jeremy and Rachel lead worship at the Fellowship of the Hills (FOTH) here in Tallahassee…AND WE ARE FRIENDS! If Tallahassee is going to be reached for Christ than churches have to realize that we are all on the same team. At the Well we are praying and cheering for FOTH. In fact, any Church in Tallahassee that believes that the Bible is 100% God’s Word is on our team and we are on theirs.

Can you imagine what would happen in our city if churches didn’t see each other as competition? I personally believe that we need at least 10 more churches planted in Tallahassee to make a big enough impact to reach the entire city. Unfortunately, many Pastors would be crapping in their pants if that came true. As my friend Justin Barfield recently said over lunch, “I am a member of the Church of Tallahassee.” Let us all realize that our competition is the darkness in our community…we are teammates with a serious battle in front of us. We need each other to literally reach the entire city.

On another topic, I received an email yesterday about my upcoming 10 year class reunion in 2009. Wow, that came quick. It will be great to see old friends. It seems like my entire class from Leon either stayed in town or moved to Atlanta.

Looking ahead to Sunday

This Sunday evening at Godby High School we will be diving into a new series called, “Losing My Religion.” R.E.M. has always been in my official top 3 bands of all time. Yes, I am well aware that they are probably the strangest people ever (I am still waiting for a definition of normal), but their sound is great. “Losing My Religion” is the first song that comes to the minds of most when they think of R.E.M…I love the mandolin! The single actually made it all the way to #4 on the charts! How was it not #1?

There is a great need in Tallahassee for many Christians and churches to lose their religion. It is absolutely mind-blowing when I think of the many man-made requirements the church has added to the Gospel throughout history. This doesn’t get any worse than in the south. The result of this sin (will someone please call it what it is?!) is cities and towns full of people who are nowhere near the door of a church due to their belief that they can’t measure up to the standards set by church culture. I hope to see you this Sunday at 5:30 as we look at the problem of religion and how it completely contradicts the very Gospel the churchy culture claims to believe. It should be fun…I love getting modern day Pharisees all worked up. Thankfully, they aren’t attending the Well.

Lunch at The Loop

I met my good buddy Josh Fruit for lunch today. We have been friends since the days of summer Bible Studies at my parents’ house when we were college students. While trying to figure out if they were calling our order number, we agreed together that Satan is a very real and biblical being whom Christians seem afraid to talk about. It almost seems creepy and over-spiritual if we even acknowledge his existence. According to 1Peter 5:8, Satan does exist and he wants to jack everything up that the Church is trying to do. Especially churches like ours that are unapologetic about connecting with people who are far from God. Our conclusion over a pizza and burgers was that Satan is going to do everything in his power to keep the Well from impacting Tallahassee and by God’s grace that is NOT going to happen. The Well has arrived and this is for real my friends. Let’s do this.

What A Night!

Last night we held our Easter Service at The Moon, one of Tallahassee’s most popular night clubs. I have still been unable to completely process all of my thoughts after a truly amazing night. What I do know is this:

1. We were absolutely where God wanted us to be.

Seeing 450 people gather to worship at the Moon was something I thought would never happen in Tallahassee. We live in a city where many Churches separate themselves from the very culture God has placed them in. Last night was a perfect picture of the Well’s mission to present an everlasting truth to an ever-changing culture. The atmosphere was incredible and the Gospel was proclaimed.

2. This is only the beginning

There is something special about to happen in Tallahassee. I am not exactly sure what I mean by that, but we live in a spiritually hungry city that is ready to stop seeing Christianity by culture rather than conviction. Can you imagine if we approached every Sunday night at Godby High School as we did Easter on The Moon? The passion to invite friends who are far from God, the energy in the room? I cannot wait to see where God is about to take us. It is important to remember, that Satan wants the exact opposite. He wants to see us get comfortable, exist in a Church/Christian culture, and stay outside of places like the Moon. Let’s pray together that God gives us a sense of urgency when it comes to being the Church in our city.
